Hello from Canada

Hello there - My name is Glen and I'm a Business Technology professor. I've been a DOS-> Win311-> OS/2 Warp-> Win2K+WinXP-> Ubuntu-> user, but now I'm triple-booting a few machines between Windows+various Linux distros. I enjoy the freedom and community that Linux provides, but still need 100% compliance with Microsoft Office formats at work (which LibreOffice still can't provide.) Hopefully in the near future!

Welcome. It is too bad that Microsoft is locking us with MS office, and OpenOffice and LibreOffice still can't read more complex files. But it looks like MS is losing the office battle. They recently released Office for Android and iOS, but it is Subscription-based Office 365, not the standalone apps. Anyway, nice to see you join the community. Explore around.

    Welcome to the community.
  • Hello Glenn, welcome to the LDC! I'm not quite sure if it complies 100% (or if ever will) but the Office suite by Kingsoft is a clone of MSOffice 2010 and, so far, I've been able to deal with everything without having any troubles with formatting, templates, etc... you may want to give it a try in one of your Linux distros.
    Cheers, mate!
  • Welcome to LDC, wish I know more about office file formats. But I only work with plain text myself.

Wow! This place seems very welcoming and encouraging. Thanks for the well wishes and suggestions re: ms office file formats. I'm quite strapped for time now with the beginning of semester, but I'll take a look at some of the alternatives. I'd be very pleased with an Office for Android working on Linux, even it was subscription-based. However, I'm not holding my breath for MS to see the Linux-Light/Lite (okay, sorry for the pun!). -- Glen
